University Awareness Campaigns

One of the main annual activities of WAC, which is a successful model of awareness, is the University Campaigns, so as part of WAC 2016 it was run, during December 2016 and January 2017.

The total number of universities engaged was 47 medical and pharmaceutical universities in 16 different governorates all over Egypt, to raise awareness among youth about HIV prevention and to fight stigma and discrimination related to HIV and AIDS.

These campaigns were held in collaboration with the student-run organizations; International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA Egypt), and the Egyptian Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (EPSF).

The two organizations were given a total of 32,600 publication materials, this included flyers, brochures, posters, t-shirts and red ribbons. They successfully outreached more than 27,000 people of 3 different categories, university students, healthcare workers and people in less privileged areas like villages, where they mobilized 1155 volunteers to disseminate HIV awareness messages and health-related messages.

The WAC 2016 university campaign was an opportunity for students to learn more about HIV and AIDS and the specific context in Egypt with a main focus on stigma and discrimination. This year’s campaign aimed to mobilize young people to engage more, rather than being at the receptive end of simple advocacy or awareness messages. Hence, social media campaigns that engaged around 7 different association, including IFMSA and EPSF was run to engage facebook and twitter users and encourage them to contribute to the cause.
